It’s not quite basketball season yet, but LeBron James is still making pretty big moves!
The NBA phenom’s production company, SpringHill Entertainment, is coming up with a scripted drama surrounding the great story of Madam C. J. Walker. If that wasn’t good enough news, Octavia Spencer is set to head up the limited series as Madam C. J. herself! Octavia always brings her A game to her projects, so this is definitely going to be one to look out for.
The series is based on the book “On Her Own Ground,” written by A’Lelia Bundles, Madam C. J.’s own great-great-granddaughter. She’s also going to be involved as a consultant to make sure this story is told right! LeBron and his company’s co-founder, Maverick Carter will also serve as executive producers, and this is a project that Bron is excited to be a part of.
“I am really proud of this project and that SpringHill will be partnering with Octavia to tell this important story,” he said in a statement. “Every American should all know the story of Madam C. J. Walker. She was an innovator, entrepreneur, social activist, and total game changer whose story has been left out of the history books. I hope this project lives up to her legacy with a story that will educate and inspire.”
Madam C. J. managed to overcome some huge adversities in her life, especially growing up poor in the 1800s—with racism even more rampant and overt then it is today. After figuring out a hair care formula to fix her own hair, she was able to build a major beauty empire and became the first American woman to be a self-made millionaire. Get hip to her life below!
Netflix is reportedly interested in making the show available to stream, which would be amazing. Always looking for a new show to binge watch! Hopefully, everything goes well and this important story is brought to fruition.
We need more great biopics and series about Black leaders and entrepreneurs who, against all odds, managed to make an incredible impact on this country. And that’s LeBron’s goal with SpringHill—to highlight more hidden figures just like Madam C. J. Can’t wait to see what he and his team develop!
